Our standpoint
Our AI Statement
Backline does not currently include any AI-powered product features. This statement explains how AI was used to help build Backline, and the principles that will guide any future use of AI in the product.
How Backline was built
Built with AI, led by people
Backline didn't emerge from a blank page. It was shaped by an individual using AI. Exploring ideas, drafting code, testing language and pushing through design problems faster than would have been possible alone. They accelerated the work, but never owned it. Every line of change, every decision and every design choice was reviewed, refined and signed off by a human. The judgement, experience and intent behind Backline is ours.
AI as a sparring partner
AI helped us move faster at the messy early stages. It suggested code patterns, rewrote copy when we were stuck, generated visual directions and acted as a sounding board for product decisions. It was a tool for exploration, not a replacement for thinking.
Human at the wheel
No AI output went live without a human reviewing it. We checked facts, tested functionality, adjusted tone and made the final call on what shipped. Backline reflects our standards, not the average of a model's suggestions.
Real examples
AI accelerated prototyping, helped refine marketing language, explored naming and design directions, and cleaned up repetitive code. The features you use, from the dashboard to the blog were built with AI assistance, but shaped by real-world event experience.
Why this matters
We believe AI is at its best when it amplifies human craft. For live events, where judgement, timing and trust matter, technology should support the people in the Backline, not try to replace them.
What we believe
These principles shape how we think about AI at Backline. They apply to the tools we use today and any AI features we might add to the product in the future.
Human-first, always
When Backline uses AI, it will be designed to assist, not replace, the people who run the show. Every creative, technical and safety-critical decision will stay with a human. Any future AI will handle repetition and noise so crew can focus on judgement, craft and the moment.
Transparent by default
If Backline ever ships an AI-powered feature, we will say so clearly. We will not hide generated content behind human-sounding labels or pretend automation is manual work. Users will always know what came from a model, what came from a person, and where to check the source.
Your data is not our training set
We do not use production data, messages, documents or account content to train third-party AI models without explicit consent. Any future model training on platform data would be opt-in, clearly explained and governed by its own terms.
Accountability stays with us
Backline remains responsible for everything we ship, including any AI-powered features we may add later. If a suggestion is wrong, incomplete or unsafe, the user will never be at fault for trusting the interface. We will build in review steps, undo paths and clear feedback channels.
Continuous review
Our AI principles are not a one-off policy. We will review new capabilities against these values, listen to crew feedback, and update our stance as the technology and industry expectations evolve.
Ethical guidelines
These guidelines shape how we choose, evaluate and talk about AI at Backline. They sit alongside our product principles and apply to every tool and feature we ship.
Fairness and inclusion
We design and test with the diverse range of crews, events and working conditions that make up live production. We monitor for bias and treat unequal outcomes as bugs to be fixed, even in the AI-assisted tools we use to build Backline.
Safety first
When AI is uncertain, we expect it to flag that uncertainty rather than hide it. We provide overrides, undo paths and clear explanations. We will never rely solely on an AI output where human safety or legal liability is at stake.
Privacy by design
We minimise what AI tools can see, avoid unnecessary data retention, and keep user content within Backline unless a user explicitly chooses otherwise. Your production data is not a product.
Honest capability claims
We describe what any AI feature can and cannot do in plain language. We will not label output as human-written, and we will not overstate accuracy. Marketing claims are checked against the same standards as the product.
Questions or concerns?
Talk to us about AI
